Seguin High
School Winter
Guard
Handbook
2008
Article I
Membership
1.
The Winter Guard is made up
of students in good academic and disciplinary standing at Seguin
High School.
2.
The Winter Guard performs at
various contests and recruiting events in the spring semester.
3.
Each student must be
evaluated for a position in the Winter Guard. This evaluation will take
place
in the fall semester for the spring season.
4.
The Winter Guard may be
split into an ‘A’ (varsity) and a
‘B’ (junior varsity) group, depending on the
number and experience level of the students. This provides more
specialized
instruction for the cast members, and will be determined during the
evaluation
process.
5.
If a student is selected to
be a cast member of the Winter Guard, he/she is required to enroll in
the
Winter Guard class that is offered either 7th or
8th period. The
class period required will depend upon whether the student is in the
‘A’ or the
‘B’ guard or upon other criteria determined by the
Director.
6.
All
rehearsals and performances are mandatory.
A schedule will be provided in this packet. Any absences must be
cleared with
the Director in writing two (2) weeks in advance. An absence at a
contest, even
if pre-arranged, may result in a cast member being written out of the
show or
replaced by a capable understudy. Due to the competitive nature of this
program, the integrity of the show as a whole must be maintained.
7.
Any cast member at any time
may be moved to understudy (non-performing) status at the
Director’s
discretion. Possible reasons may include poor grades, attendance,
attitude,
injury, failure to produce, etc.
8.
All cast members and a
parent/guardian must sign a contract in order to participate in Winter
Guard. Students may not pick up
contracts for other cast members.

Etiquette
1.
Winter
Guard cast members are expected to
attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances. Each
one is mandatory and graded.
2.
If
for any reason a cast member must miss a
rehearsal, two weeks prior notice is required in
writing. Emergency absences will be excused with a note from
a
parent or physician explaining the absence. Any work missed is the sole
responsibility of the cast member, and must be covered prior to the
next
rehearsal. Please make every effort to schedule doctor, orthodontic,
hair
appointments, etc. outside of class
and rehearsal time.
3.
No
cast member, including understudies, may
miss a scheduled performance. A missed performance, even if excused due
to
illness or emergency, may result in a cast member being written out of
the
show, or replaced by a capable understudy.
4.
Proper
attire to rehearsals is a must.
Clothing should allow free and comfortable movement without concealing
bodylines, especially in the spine, knees and ankles. Cast members
should be
comfortable but protect their modesty.
Prohibited items are:
·
Jeans, jean shorts
·
Skirts
·
Flip-flops
·
Clothing that hinders movement
·
Short shorts without opaque
tights/leggings underneath
·
Tennis shoes
·
Jewelry
·
Watches
Dance shoes
may be worn during rehearsal when appropriate. Stud earrings or small hoops and small
necklaces are the only acceptable jewelry.
Hair will be worn neatly and entirely out of
the face at all times.
Cast members will be
expected to be in all
black attire when clinicians are present. These dates will be given in
advance.
5.
Cast members are a direct
reflection of the Seguin High School Color Guard and Marching Band, of
the Seguin
Independent
School District,
and of the City of Seguin. Any
member acting
in a manner reflecting poorly on any of these entities will face
disciplinary
action.
6.
Cast
members are expected at all times to be
respectful to their peers, instructors, clinicians and other Color
Guard
programs. Profanity and abusive language is prohibited at all times
while under
contract with this program. “Bad-mouthing” other
programs will not be
tolerated. If you don’t have anything nice to say,
don’t say it at all.
Disrespect and insubordination will incur disciplinary action, and
possible
removal from the program.
7.
All
cast members should strive for the
excellence of the program. It is not the individual, but the ensemble
that
takes priority, therefore all cast members should make every effort to
assist
anyone who may be struggling within the program. You
cannot survive and succeed as a group of individuals.
8.
Rehearsal
time is limited and rehearsals must
be efficient. Rehearsals will begin and end promptly when they are
slated to
begin and end. This means that cast members will have any floor/props
staged,
equipment set up, be dressed out, stretch, and have all articles
necessary to
rehearsal prior to the slated
rehearsal time.
9.
Cast
members will have with them at all times
one roll of electrical tape in each color that their individual
equipment
requires.
10.Due to the nature of this activity,
schedules do sometimes change.
Notice of any alterations will be given to cast members as soon as
possible.
11. Other amendments or rules may be
given at a later date, as necessary.
